I love jiu-jitsu, it makes me confident, it helps with bullying.. It’s awesome here!

Walking into a gym where I feel like there is never a situation where I felt that I was at risk of being injured is very important to me.

The way the class is taught was incredibly helpful for my brain… here they really teach you how, they break it down into the ‘how to’ steps.

Every black belt was once a beginner. Here’s what your first few months at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Torrance could look like.
Month 1
Getting Acclimated
Adults can expect to embrace new movements through foundational techniques—stay curious, have fun, and celebrate every small win. While kids can just focus on having fun diving into playful games that teach the basics principles of jiu-jitsu and making new friends on the mat.
Month 2 - 3
Gaining Confidence
Adults drill each sequence until it’s second nature—also practicing to be a “good bad guy” who offers just the right resistance to help their partners learn. Kids beam with pride as they showcase their foundational moves with enthusiasm and confidence on the mat.
Month 4 - 5
Muscle Memory
By months four through five, both adults and kids have built enough foundational muscle memory to tackle our Reflex Development Drills—fluid strings of multiple techniques that test and reveal the reflexes you’ve honed, boosting confidence in your ability to flow effortlessly from one move to the next. At this stage, motivated students may be ready for carefully supervised live sparring.
Month 6 - 12
Around the six to twelve-month mark, students—both adults and kids—who’ve demonstrated consistent focus, technical proficiency, and respect for the fundamentals may be ready to step into our advanced classes. These sessions introduce more complex techniques and live sparring to challenge your skills and deepen your understanding. Progression is always based on individual readiness, so if you’re not quite there yet, you’re encouraged to keep refining your foundations until you feel confident to level up.
Recently brought my 4 year old daughter in to give it a try and she absolutely loved it. I thought she would be intimidated and wouldn’t like it but everyone was so friendly and welcoming, they made us feel right at home. The coaches are super attentive and make class really enjoyable for kids her age. I look forward to watching her grow at Gracie University.

I’ve been really impressed with this Gracie Jiu Jitsu facility. The place is always spotless and incredibly well-organized, which makes for a really comfortable training environment. Everything is clean from the mats to the locker rooms and it’s clear that they take hygiene seriously. On top of that, everyone who works there is genuinely helpful and friendly. The staff and instructors go out of their way to make you feel welcome and supported. It’s a great atmosphere all around, and I highly recommend it!

I’m 30 years old and had never stepped foot into a martial arts class until recently. My first Gracie University Combatives class far exceeded even my highest expectations. I felt so welcomed—by both instructors and students—empowered, encouraged, and motivated, and I was immediately hooked. Gracie University has dramatically changed my life for the better, and I’m so grateful!

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’s Mat Munchkins program for young children is quite good with their incredible instructors! They are exceptionally patient with young children, and their ability to connect with our kid has made all the difference. Our child, who can sometimes be a bit hesitant with new activities, now looks forward to coming to class every single week because the instructors make it so interesting and fun. The instructors deliver their age appropriate lessons with warmth and encouragement. It’s clear they genuinely care about fostering a positive and engaging learning environment where kids feel comfortable, confident, and excited to participate.

The staff consistently reinforces values like focus, respect, dedication, discipline, and confidence. These are the very principles I try to instill at home, and it’s a blessing to see them reinforced on the mat. It’s clear they’re not just building strong athletes they’re shaping strong, respectful, and confident young people.
If you’re a parent looking for a program that builds character as much as it teaches technique, I highly recommend Gracie University. It’s everything I believe every youth needs to get a head start in life.

Amazing place!!! It is truly wonderful to see my child actually enjoying something!!! It’s awesome because there are so many kids and more than enough coaches to look after every kid to experience the same. Because of a lot of kids, kids learn from each other. The best part is how enthusiastic coaches are. They know how to grab attention from children. Their programs to teach and learn respect is another level of education. ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED!!!

Still have questions? You’re not alone. Here are some of the most common things new students ask before starting their journey with us.
Absolutely. Every class at Gracie Jiu‑Jitsu in Torrance follows a structured format, with instructors emphasizing safety and control in every drill. We progress at a pace that matches your comfort and skill, creating a supportive environment where you can build confidence and master self‑defense without unnecessary risk.
Your child’s safety comes first in our Gracie Bullyproof kids jiu‑jitsu classes in Torrance. Early training focuses on technique, confidence, and character building—without live sparring. Once a student shows consistent focus, mastery of the basics, and respect for partners, they’re invited into our advanced Black Belt Club, where age‑appropriate sparring is introduced under close instructor supervision. Every step emphasizes safety, care, and gradual progression so your child can grow stronger and more confident on and off the mat.
Both options offer powerful benefits—it depends on where you feel most comfortable. Many women choose Women Empowered, our women’s self‑defense program in Torrance. This program is taught by experienced female instructors in a supportive, community‑driven setting.
Many women also enjoy our co‑ed beginner classes because training with a mix of partners can help to build timing, leverage, and real‑world self‑defense skills against different body types and strength levels.
Whichever path you choose, you’ll be part of the same Gracie University family, gaining confidence and technique every step of the way.
We don’t believe in rushing—but we also recognize that motivated beginners benefit from live practice. In our youth and adult jiu-jitsu classes, new students spend the first several months building a solid foundation: learning positions, controls, escapes, and submissions in a safe, cooperative setting.
Around the 4–8 month mark, once you’ve demonstrated consistent technique, control, and respect for your training partners, you may be invited to begin age and skill-appropriate sparring under close instructor supervision. This gradual approach ensures that when you start sparring, you’re equipped to train safely, confidently, and with purpose.
When you arrive, you’ll be fitted with your official Gracie University gi—a lightweight, durable uniform that keeps training safe and sanitary for everyone. Please remove all jewelry, clip your nails, tie back long hair, and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. That’s all you need to get started!
Join thousands of students who’ve discovered confidence, strength, and community through Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Try it out for 10-days on us!
