Got questions about starting a trial at Gracie University or what to expect in class? You’re not alone — here are answers to the most common questions from new students and first-time visitors.
For your first class, you can arrive in comfortable athletic clothing. As part of your trial membership, you’ll receive an official Gracie Jiu-Jitsu uniform so you can train in comfort and consistency with the rest of the class.
If you’re attending a beginner program—like Gracie Combatives®, Gracie Bullyproof®, or Women Empowered®—there is no live sparring required. These programs are specifically designed for new students to build confidence and technique in a safe, structured environment.
If you’re attending Master Cycle® (our advanced program for students ranked blue belt or higher), live sparring is part of the curriculum—but always optional and conducted under close supervision.
Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early. It gives you time to check in, meet your instructor, and get comfortable before class starts.
Absolutely. You’re welcome to bring a parent, partner, or friend to sit in and observe your class. We have seating available for guests in our main training areas.
I am much more patient than I ever was. This teaches you to be calm in bad circumstances.
