Still have questions? You’re not alone. Here are some of the most common things women ask about our Free Women’s Self-Defense Seminars.
Absolutely! At Gracie University, we prioritize structure, safety, and control. Each student is encouraged to progress at a pace that matches their comfort and skill, creating a supportive environment that builds confidence and masters self‑defense without unnecessary risk.
Women Empowered is based on Gracie Jiu-Jitsu — a proven, leverage-based martial arts program designed to help smaller individuals effectively defend against larger opponents. The curriculum focuses on the most common types of attacks women may face.
Both. Women Empowered focuses heavily on boundary-setting, verbal assertiveness, and recognizing red flags early — so you’re prepared to defuse situations long before they escalate.
Absolutely not! The Women Empowered program meets you where you are — no matter your current fitness level. You’ll build strength, coordination, and skill step-by-step, supported by instructors and classmates who want to see you grow.
Yes! Many women feel more comfortable starting alongside someone they trust. We love welcoming sisters, best friends, mothers and daughters — anyone who wants to learn together. Please note, a separate registration is required for each participant.
The seminar is recommended for ages 13 and up, though we welcome 12-year-olds who parents feel are ready to participate. This seminar makes for a great mother-daughter experience! All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
The dress code for the seminar is all-black athletic clothing. We recommend a comfortable t-shirt that covers your shoulders, leggings or workout pants that cover your knees, and flip-flops or sandals.
That said, if you don’t have black workout clothes, no problem — please attend in whatever attire that you feel comfortable moving around in. Everyone is welcome!
If you can no longer make it, just let us know before the seminar, and we can open the spot for someone else, no problem!
Yes, there are two parking lots available, along with street parking along Oak Street. A parking map and directions will be emailed to you before the event.

I decided to try Women’s Empowerment on a whim, knowing I’d keep putting it off otherwise, and I’m so glad I did! From the moment I walked in, everyone was incredibly welcoming, and the instruction made learning feel approachable rather than intimidating. If you’ve ever been curious but hesitant to take that first step, I encourage you to give it a try—even if it’s just for one class 🙂

I started the women empowered program and it was an amazing experience as a first timer. The pace at which the class is taught is very manageable and stress free. I did not feel embarrassed or excluded as it’s my first ever time to try a program like this. Everyone is so kind and inclusive. After one class, I made up my mind to join for more

I’m 30 years old and had never stepped foot into a martial arts class until recently. My first Gracie University Combatives class far exceeded even my highest expectations. I felt so welcomed—by both instructors and students—empowered, encouraged, and motivated, and I was immediately hooked. Gracie University has dramatically changed my life for the better, and I’m so grateful!

Before coming here, I had never desired to do jujitsu in my life, but after watching my sister do it, I learned so much and wanted to jump in there and practice the moves with the others. It looked like so much fun! So, I decided to try it out, and I loved it! I learned so much in just two days, and I can’t wait to keep on learning jujitsu! Everyone there is so kind, helpful, and patient with the new students. They made me feel welcomed on my first day. I love the feel of community here and how it’s a safe space to learn self defense. I would recommend it to anyone.

Last Friday and Saturday I tried my first classes: Women’s Empowerment and Gracie Combat. AMAZING! Love the thoroughness of instruction, attention to detail, professionalism, hospitality, and the level of knowledge of the instructors and students. Gracie is a place to learn and grow. The classes are tough and worthwhile. Respect!

I’ve had a wonderful experience at Gracie. This was my first time trying jiu-jitsu because I was scared for an old shoulder injury. They focus heavily on safety with your partner. I feel like I had a ton of individual attention from the instructors and the energy is extremely friendly and welcoming from walking through the door. Recommend for anyone’s first time.
